Book: The Essentials of Buddhist Meditation: The essentials for Practicing Calming-and-Insight & Dhyāna Meditation (p. 139-153)—Chapter 7: Manifestation of Roots of Goodness

After his central chapter on “Actual Cultivation,” which presented the basic methods of calming and insight meditation, Zhiyi discusses the fruits of successful practice in chapter 7, “Manifestations of Roots of Goodness.” The bulk of this chapter is divided into two sections. The first deals with signs of successful practice as they manifest in the course of five traditional forms of Buddhist meditation, namely meditation on the breath, on the impure, on loving kindness, on causes and conditions, and on the Buddha. The second section deals with discerning the true and the false experiences in the course of absorptive meditation.
